The list of travel acronyms is truly staggering. TSA, PNR, GDS, KTN, FIT, DMC - the list goes on and on and on!
And that's without factoring in airport codes.
But lately, a new set of acronyms has entered the chat: ETA, EES, and ETIAS.
If your eyes are already glazing over from this alphabet soup and you're planning to travel to Europe anytime soon, let me simplify things!
ETA: ELECTRONIC TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION
If you're a U.S. citizen traveling to the United Kingdom for tourism, visiting family, business meetings, conferences, or short-term study (up to six months), you'll need to secure an ETA before you arrive. The application currently costs £20, and while approval is often quick, it can take a few days, so it's best to apply well before your trip!
EES: ENTRY/EXIT SYSTEM
Traveling to a country in the Schengen Area, like France, Greece, or Italy (i.e. most European countries)? You'll go through the EES process when you arrive. This system records your passport information along with biometric data, like your fingerprints and a facial image. There's nothing you need to apply for ahead of time! Just be aware that your first border crossing may take a little longer.
ETIAS: EUROPEAN TRAVEL INFORMATION & AUTHORIZATION SYSTEM
This one's been making headlines for what feels like forever... mostly because it keeps getting delayed. As of now, ETIAS is delayed until 2027. Once it launches, travelers from visa-exempt countries like the U.S., Canada, Australia, and the U.K. will need to apply for authorization before visiting many European destinations. But don't stress - it isn't happening yet.
This is the simplest possible breakdown! Every traveler, destination, and itinerary comes with its own set of requirements, and that's where I come in. Travel regulations are constantly changing, but part of my job is keeping my clients informed, prepared, and one step ahead of the paperwork.
After having gone through the ever-changing Covid regulations several years ago, the ETA and EES are a piece of cake!
